THE HOSPITAL
A TESTIMONY TO SELFLESS LOVE

Swami seeing the report of the Hospital in February 2007
and blessing Sri Manoj Bhimani, one of the trustees
Where selfless love is, there God is. The hospital today stands as a testimony to the whole world what pure love, when expressed in service, can do. Over the years, many distinguished personalities, national and international, have stepped into the portals of this ‘mansion of love’; some came as curious visitors, some as willing-to-learn social workers and some as inquisitive investigators. All of them witnessed the unbelievable and left humbled paying homage to this ‘savior of the poor’. When the former Chief Minister of Gujarat visited the place a couple of years ago, he left with the hospital a cheque with a generous amount from his relief fund. Very recently, the Rajkot Municipal corporation, as a mark of gratitude, contributed a large sum to the hospital’s coffers.
Till 2006, more than six hundred and forty such Rabiyas and Rashids have found hope, health and happiness, and by 2008, the hospital targets it will rise to surely one thousand. And these are patients not only from in and around Rajkot or from the city of Ahmedabad, they come from all over the state of Gujarat. At times, you will even find patients from the far-north of India. Pandit Shiv Kumar Sharma, the world renowned Santoor maestro, on his visit to the hospital, was surprised to find a patient from his home-state of Jammu and Kashmir. Selfless love has become so scarce in the present times, any amount of distance or ordeal is welcome once you are convinced it is assured.

A Hospital with a Noble Mission
Sri Sathya Sai Heart Hospital, Rajkot
In the year 2000, the foundation of the temple of service i.e. the Sri Sathya Sai Heart Hospital was laid at Rajkot. Established with an expenditure (cost) of Rs 15 crore, this hospital with all facilities and of international standard did not incur only one expenditure and that is of Bill Book! Till date 3000 operations have been performed totally free of cost bringing smile on many faces and in return has got the satisfaction of “manav seva”.
Baba says, 'Whatever good you are giving to the society… that comes to me. If society is satisfied the I am satisfied… After that you need not call me… I will quietly come there… You take one step… I will take 100 steps.' Sri Sathya Sai Heart Hospital, Rajkot established in 2003 with an expenditure of 15 crores does not have entry only for one expenditure i.e. the Bill Book. It is surprising but a truth and behind this is a very strong and valid reason. When the proposal for this hospital was kept in front of Sri Sathya Sai Baba, he put forward 3 conditions… 1. Treatment should be free for patients. 2. Wealthy and affording people should come forward to help and put their wealth to proper use. 3. Patients should be considered as God and one should feel fortunate to serve them. They should serve with this feeling and not with the feeling of sympathy or charity. Following the instructions of Baba this hospital has become an example in the last 5 years. Trying to help each and every one in society, this hospital is well known as 'Dil without Bill' among the less fortunate. Sri Sathya Sai Heart Hospital is not only an example of selfless service but also an example of secular unity. According to Baba's instruction there should be no differentiation based on religion, caste or creed. Every patient is revered as God and given totally free treatment. Running on the guideline of Sri Sathya Sai Baba, this hospital has become a ray of hope for thousands of patients. Believing in the philosophy of Manavseva, the hospital has moved quite ahead in 5th years. In 2003, 166 people benefited and had their hearts beating properly and now the numbers are increasing daily. In 2005 the hospital had 504 operations. In 2007 518 heart operations had been done by the hospital. And now the hospital has decided to do 1008 operations and give rebirth to the needy people.

Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam is praying at Baba’s temple at
Sri Sathya Sai Heart Hospital Rajkot
“This is A Temple of service” :
Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam
On 27th May 2009, at around 11 o’clock, in the Sathya Marg, Kalawad Road a huge crowd had gathered. After an anxious wait of minutes, a vehicle with full security came and parked near the Sathya Sai hospital. People grew very anxious to see the person in the car. Many people presumed that the person being a V.V.I.P would not even look at them.
In two minutes came out the person with the silver hair, once holding the highest post in the country, the great patriot and above all having a very simple nature with a pleasant smile, He greeted the people with folded hands just like a 5 year old child!.
Dr. Kalam has an immense affection for the ordinary people of India, which is an indication of his own simplicity and innate spirituality. Hence he easily mingled with guests, trustee and the staff. He then addressed the doctors of the hospital and reminded that they should not treat their work as a money making profession but as a service mission. Not everyone gets an opportunity to serve others. Hence doctors who get this opportunity should consider themselves lucky and do their duty sincerely. They should follow what is written in the oath.
I will take my profession as a service mission.
I will sacrifice my comforts and try to bring a smile on the lips of patients.
I will always try to do the best.
I will never cheat any patient.
If any patient is not satisfied with my treatment then I will find out the reason and
then try to solve his problem.
I will whole heartedly involve myself in this service activity and make it my life’s
mission.
The former president had desired to see this temple of service where operations are done totally free. Dr. Kalam observed the service activities of the hospital and reminded the doctors and nurses about their duty.
Any noble work is always supported by God. This is very true with the Sathya Sai Hospital. The visit of Dr. Kalam was like a dream come true. He said “I am very happy to know that Sri Sathya Sai Heart Hospital is giving free services to the poor and needy people of the society. For me this experience is like actually meeting the “Embodiment of Service Himself”.
After seeing the hospital’s service activities Dr. Kalam addressed the people in the prayer hall, lit the divine lamp at the temple and prayed that this service activity should continue and spread widely.
Honored with the Bharat Ratna, Sri APJ Abdul Kalam though short in stature, has a personality which inspires many. Born in a small town in Rameshwaram Dr. Kalam’s childhood was very simple. He dreamt big and had the courage to pursue his dreams. Hence he brought about a revolution in the field of missiles by becoming a scientist. Not only this, from 2002-2007 he held the highest post of President in our country. With his dedication and hard work Dr. Kalam has given us a dream of how India would be in 2020. In spite of being such an important person, his behavior is that of very simple person. Even when he was the President, leaving all the protocols behind, many a times he has met the children and spoken to people.
Dr. Kalam has been Baba’s devotee right from childhood. After becoming the President he had offered his two months salary at the lotus feet of Swami and asked ‘Bhagwan to accept the humble gift, Baba said ‘I don’t want this money’. I will not put this money in any trust but I will use it to give gold medal every year to deserving students, who like you want to study further’. And as per Baba’s wish the money was put in the bank. Sri Sathya Sai University is the only University in India which gives gold medal.
As per Baba’s wish in the year 2008, Dr. Kalam has inaugurated the Sathya Sai International Sports Centre on Baba’s Birthday. Dr. Kalam’s devotion towards Baba and his simplicity well came out during the prize distribution ceremony in the University, where he did not want to be with the bodyguards inspite of holding the President post. Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam visited each and every ward of the Sathya Sai Heart Hospital. He also inaugurated the operation theater and cath lab of the hospital. The news of Dr. Kalam’s visit filled the hospital staff and patients with enthusiasm and he told them to get well soon and live a happy life true to his simple nature he specially spoke many patients and showed that the philosophy of having faith in god and living a good life should be the real goal.
As per Baba’s instructions without any difference of caste, creed or colour, the hospital renders its services by seeing God in each patient. Its resolution in this direction is becoming stronger. Last year the hospital did 768 operations totally free and in this year they have made a noble resolution to do 1008 operations. Dr. Kalam appreciated this resolution and added that he would pray that people get benefited of this noble service.
Bharat Ratna Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam displayed the height of his personality when he took his shoes in his own hands. While visiting Sri Sathya Sai Heart Hospital he obeyed the notice ‘remove your shoes outside’. Without any hesitation Dr. Kalam did this and said, rules are followed by everyone’. These noble qualities of this noble person make him a real Bharat Ratna!
After observing the service activities of the hospital Dr. Kalam went to the temple and addressed the people. Dr. Kalam also gave bouquets to children who had been operated and also gave them blessing. He also discussed and answered queries of the doctor’s.
Dr. Kalam is well known for his love for children. The students of Sathya Sai Vidya Mandir were specially there to honor him. He discussed about their school activities and their future dreams.
Addressing the guests, media hospital staff and doctor’s in the temple hall, Dr. Kalam said “In any corner of the world, the poor normally get upset with the name of disease and this is even more if it happens to be a heart problem. They lose all hope of living. But the hospital has kept alive the hopes of many underprivileged. He said “I don’t know what to say about this hospital. Yes, I can surely call it. “The temple of service” The doctors work 50% for a patient’s recovery and the rest 50% is the grace of god and Blessings of Baba.
Dr. Kalam said that this visit to the Sathya Sai Heart Hospital which is the hope and support of poor, was a real purposeful divine experience one and he prayed that this service activity must go on continuously.

A sincere effort to bring smiles
in the lives of people of Surat
There are many charitable hospitals in our country, but Sri Sathya Sai Heart Hospital is different from all of them. At every step the patient is treated as God and hence the institution has the blessings of the almighty. So the common man today is relieved.”
On 20th of Dec’09, there was a mega heart Camp organized at Bajipura near Surat. When the revered Shri Ramesh Oza spoke about the hospital, there was a look of satisfaction on the faces of people for having brought their dear ones to the right place. In the present times of modernization and commercialization there is no place for service. Hence a disease like heart ailment is really taxing for the common man. If such a disease strikes a family which cannot afford even a square meal a day there are only two options left for him either to silently watch his dear one suffering or to sell whatever he has to save his dear one!
But believing strongly in the dictum “Manav Seva is Madhav Seva” Sri Sathya Sai Baba advised his followers ‘The poor in the society are deprived and are suffering, if you want to do Service, then Serve these people… ’In keeping with Swami’s philosophy of “Service to man is Service to God.” The operations costing around 1.5 to 2 lacs are done totally free.
To reach up to the people of the remotest areas, the hospital organizes heart camps at various districts. Such a camp was organized at Surat where more then 1300 patients were examined. This was the first camp in Gujarat where such a huge number of cardiac patients were examined. Among those examined around 400 patients were to be operated at Rajkot. The estimated cost of this is around 7 crore. Not only this, around 200 patients got the benefit of angiography also.
Revered Shri Ramesh Oza, diamond merchant, Sri Asit Mehta, leading person of Jain Community, Shri Sevantilal Shah, the leader of entire Patidar Samaj. Shri Laljibhai Patel, Mathurbhai Sevani, Chairman of Cadila Pharmaceutical, Shri Indravadan Modi, Shri Vallabh Kasodria and Shri Manubhai Patel were present at the camp to appriciated hospital seva.
This camp became significant in many ways. On one hand for the first time 1300 patients were examined, which was a true example of service. At the same time the service oriented people of society gave a supporting hand to the mission and proved that the “Bhamashas” still exist in society! The famous personality in the diamond industry Shri Anubhai Jagani contributed 51 lakhs and Shri Manubhai Ballar contributed 11 lakhs.
In the Surat camp right from registrations to the food arrangements was done by Sumul Dairy. The Sathya Sai Samiti at Bardoli and the entire Patidar Samaj joined hands to see that maximum people take advantage of this camp. The students of Sri Sathya Sai Vidya Mandir, Ahmedabad presented a thought provoking skit on heart ailment and the prevalent commercialisation in the medical sector. Revered Shri Ramesh Oza who had visited Puttaparthi was really impressed by the works of Baba. . Out of the patients examined in the previous camp organized at Surat, till date 322 operations have been successfuly performed .

Healing of hearts at
SABARKANTHA…
On 28th June, 2009, Sunday at 10 a.m, the students of Sri Sathya Sai Vidya Mandir, presented a skit throwing light on the present health scenario and heart patients in a packed auditorium of Sabar Dairy before a huge audience and eminent personalities of Gujarat .
The child patient of the drama Jayendra was a bright student. His parents had a lot of expectations and dreams for their son.
But for past many months Jayendra would get tired. Slowly his state worsened so much that he had to stop playing and also quit school. They took him to the doctors who diagnosed a hole in the heart and told the expenditure for the treatment would be around 2 lacs.
Living on a very small income by doing labour work in a village like Bayad, how could they ever handle a sudden situation of a serious heart disease involving an enormous expenditure?
Seeing his deteriorating condition at times his parents would literally cry. When the modern hospitals of the city close their doors for the poor, then there is no saviour for them except God. This real life drama presented by the students brought tears to many eyes.
Showing the realities of present day, the skit was not merely a piece of imagination but the real story of a 10th std student Jayendra of Bayad taluka. It was 4 years back that the hole was detected and his parents knocked the doors of all big hospitals, but who would treat without money?
During this time in 2007, a free heart camp was organized at Modasa by the Sri Sathya Sai Heart Hospital. Jayendra came there and then was operated at Sri Sathya Sai Heart Hospital at Rajkot. Giving a new life to thousands of people like Jayendra, this hospital is trying to reach various places to the poor and needy people.
Recently such a camp was organized at the Sabar dairy at Himmatnagar. Around 815 patients were checked up free at the camp Out of this 106 were given dates for operation at Rajkot. Not only this around 142 patients got the facility of angiography.
Following this principle Sri Sathya Sai Heart Hospital has completed 2500 heart operations totally free till date.
Usually the registrations are done before the camp. Poverty and disease have widely engulfed this arid border area of Sabarkatha.
May be because of this, though the registrations were 700, the real number of patients that turned up were around 815.
To support the cause of the hospital, there were eminent personalities of the society. Among the dignitaries present were Collector of Sabarkantha Sri N. Thennarasan, M.D. of GCMMF Shri B.M.Vyas, M.P. Mahendrasingh Chauhan, Chairman of Asian Granites Hasmukh Patel, and Chairman of Sabar Dairy Shamalbhai Patel. They all appreciated the noble cause of the hospital.
